Our Lib Dem London agenda

Lib Dem London Agenda

The single biggest limitation to pursuing your dream is not dreaming. Embarking on her vision to become the Mayor of London, Chamali believes that Liberal Democrats must strive for a better deal for London.

Chamali will be your Mayoral Candidate. One who listens to what policies you want to put forward as a party. In this selection campaign, the emphasis must remain on nominating the person who will best represent the views of our party.

We already have an excellent London Policy Agenda drawn up by the Party. In April 2007, Chamali suggested some improvements to the existing policies. As well as her own new ideas, she strongly believes that we need to find out what Londoners want. Chamali wants to give London back to the People.

Local party members have been out there on the ground talking to their communities. Our members know what Londoners want. It is important that we supplement our London Liberal Democrat Policy Agenda with views of our London membership. It is the only way to deliver policies that Londoners want.

Underground and public transport

Chamali's election as Mayor will terminate Ken and his entourage from globetrotting and see real investment of your hard earned tax into your route to work. As Mayor of London, Chamali will implement variable off-peak pricing on the tube so that there are more bums on seats and the tube does not run at 10% capacity in the evening.

Improving transport

Despite being in office for nearly 8 years, Ken has failed to deliver a London-wide Oyster Card or an integrated and efficient system of transport. Chamali will ensure money is invested to reduce the cost of ticket prices in parts of Outer London such as Orpington or Carshalton. She is also committed to reducing journey delays across the Capital, particularly in places like Ilford North and Greenwich

Housing

In Boroughs such as Barnet, Brent, Camden, Hornsey & Wood Green, Islington, Kingston, Sutton, Hendon, Kensington & Chelsea, and Westminster fewer and fewer people are making it on to the housing ladder. As Mayor of London, Chamali will push for substantial involvement of local people and devolve power to the Boroughs. This will empower them in their negotiations with developers so that in areas such as Croydon, regeneration and development meets the needs of the local community.

Housing - Hanger Lane

These two houses on Hanger Lane have been boarded up since before Chamali was born!! Chamali can remember her father pointing out these two homes to her when she was a toddler. Her parents used to travel past them en route to Chiswick to visit the London Buddhist Foundation and still 30 years on, these homes remain derelict.

Chamali will campaign to ensure properties like these are renovated and not left derelict. Let's unlock the 91,000 empty homes across the Capital.

Environment

Crossrail celebrations

As a Londoner Chamali is heavily reliant on public transport and is totally committed to the protection of the environment.

As Mayor of London, she will aim to power the tube with more renewable energy, reach a properly structured Public Private Partnership between the service providers that will avoid strikes and deliver an integrated, greener and more efficient system of transport.

In Hillingdon, Hounslow, Putney, Richmond and Twickenham the Government's continued desire to expand Heathrow is threatening the health and increasing noise suffered by local residents. Chamali would continue to fight against the airport's expansion.

It is essential London gets a real grip on climate change. CO2 emissions continue to grow across the Capital under the current Mayor. Chamali aims to make London an International Benchmark for Kyoto targets. She would lead by example and actively support people in learning how they can protect the environment.

Policing

Lack of policing

Crime is different in every borough: some Boroughs suffer from burglaries, others from vandalism or violent crime with an increasing gang and gun culture. We cannot have a one size fits all policy, but we do need more bobbies on the beat across London. We need effective policing and to reduce paperwork so more police officers can be out on our streets.

Croydon, Bermondsey and Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Lewisham, Streatham and Vauxhall are areas for driving investment in training & development so young people can better themselves. We need to ensure people feel there is more to their future than just a life of crime.

Chamali will work with the police, local officials and communities to ensure that people feel safe in London. A few weeks ago Chamali met Sir Ian Blair to hold him to account and to point out that fighting crime is not simply about what he wants to do, but how the community co-operates with him.

Olympics

Olympics

Boroughs know best: Chamali believes in more localised Government and that the Liberal Democrats can deliver better public services, better housing and will seek to safeguard our streets from the threat of terror and crime.

It is the principles and ideals of this political culture that can transform the Olympics into THE EVENT of our lifetime.

Londoners from every borough must benefit from the games, whether they live in Ealing, Barnet, Hammersmith or Sutton. Chamali will set a strategy to ensure that opportunities are made available to all businesses across London should they wish to get involved with the Olympics. Chamali will also ensure that post 2012 we have a self financing development, not just a series of Millennium Domes.
